Wall Jump

A Wall Jump is a Context-Sensitive Movement Option wherein the player character Jumps off of a wall, often at an angle incident to the wall. Often in games where movement is a focus, it is an important part of a player’s toolkit.

When a player character is near a wall they can jump off of, they may slide down it, or they may stick to the wall. Wall Jumping may be bound by a Once-Per-Jump Rule, but it frequently has no restrictions aside from wall proximity. A player may only be able to Wall Jump off of certain types of walls.

Examples

Hollow Knight (2017) – The player gains the ability to Wall Jump as a reward for defeating an early-game boss. This is required to reach certain necessary areas, serving as a Gating Mechanism.

Super Mario 64 (1996) – Wall Jumping is part of the player character’s base moveset.

Ultrakill (2018) – Wall Jumping is limited to three uses before the player character needs to land on ground in order to perform another wall jump.
