Walk

A Walk is a grounded movement option in which the player character moves across the ground at their default speed. In systems where a player has alternative movement speeds, their Walk is specifically their default movement speed, with their faster and slower speed being their Sprint and Slow Walk respectively. A Walk may not feature the character literally walking in their animation, and it may be referred to by other names in a given game.

Walking is very simple and near-ubiquitous, and so its variations tend to appear in the nuances of a game’s physics systems, such as Acceleration Curves. Walking commonly has Movement On a Dime. The direction a player character can walk may be limited, especially in Grid-Based Movement systems. The base speed of walking may be increased by Powerups or stats, or it may be decreased by Status Effects. Certain terrain may affect the properties of a character’s walk – see Ice Physics.

Examples

Celeste (2018) – The player character can Walk left and right.

Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow (1996) – Example of a Grid-Based Walk.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011) – The player character’s Walk speed is decreased by encumbrance, a Status Effect caused by exceeding Inventory Capacity.

Street Fighter II (1991) – Each player can walk towards or away from their opponent. Walking backwards notably shares an input with Blocking.
