Time Limit

A Time Limit is a mechanic that requires players to complete objectives, tasks, or levels within a specified timeframe. Failure to do so triggers consequences such as failure, or game over. Time Limits are commonly used to create urgency or force players to play quickly.

Time Limits may be contained to specific levels, areas, or challenges, or they may apply to an entire game. In some cases, exceeding the Time Limit may only result in increased challenge or new obstacles, instead of instant failure. Time Limits may be extended or paused by Powerups, and they may not apply in certain areas (like Safe Rooms). Time Limits very frequently overlap with Time-Based Scoring mechanics, where players gain Score or other bonuses for completing a task quickly.

Examples

Super Mario Bros (1985) – Each level features a 400-second countdown timer. Features Time-Based Scoring.

Outer Wilds (2019) – The whole game takes place within a 22-minute solar system destruction loop. Players advance exploration through accumulated knowledge in each cycle.

Final Fantasy XIV (2013) – On Savage and Extreme difficulties, bosses have a 10-14 minute enrage timer. Upon expiration, the boss will instantly kill all players. This prevents low DPS players from passing.

Hades (2020) – Features Tight Deadline, an optional Time Limit applied to individual runs. The Time Limit pauses in certain safe areas and during dialogue. When time is up, the player’s health starts to slowly drain, so completing the run is still possible.
