Perfect Dodge

A Perfect Dodge is a defensive mechanic and subtype of Dodge. Perfect Dodge describes any time the player is rewarded for dodging with precise timing coinciding with an enemy attack. After doing so, the game gives the player some material benefit. The timing for this mechanic is usually strict, allowing for player skill expression.

The benefit given by a Perfect Dodge varies greatly, but often takes the effect of a positive Status Effect or an opportunity to damage the attacking enemy.

Examples

Bayonetta (2009) – Features “Witch Time” wherein time will decelerate to slow motion (a type of Bullet Time) when a Perfect Dodge is performed on an enemy, allowing Bayonetta to attack freely.

Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 (2024) – Features a Perfect Dodge mechanic that allows the player to deal massive damage to an enemy if they evade their attack on a strict timing.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017) – Features the “Perfect Rush” mechanic, where Link is able to attack an enemy repeatedly in slow motion after dodging an attack perfectly.
