Manual Blinking

Manual Blinking is a vision-control mechanic defined by the player briefly closing the player character’s eyes. When blinking, the player loses vision. By its nature, it is typically confined to games with a First-Person Perspective.

While Manual Blinking mainly restricts the player’s vision, the player may gain certain information when blinking. The act of blinking itself may also affect the behavior of the game or of NPCs (such as Weeping Angels).

Examples

SCP – Containment Breach (2012) – Features SCP-173, a Weeping Angel enemy who only moves when unobserved. The player must manage their blinking and keep an eye on SCP-173 in order to escape.

Before Your Eyes (2021) – A narrative game that uses the player’s camera to determine if they blink or not. When the player blinks, it will skip forward in the narrative, and the player can miss key information.

Blackout Club (2018) – Features an Invisible enemy, the Shape. Players can only see its silhouette while blinking.
