Long Jump

A Long Jump is a type of Jump defined by a large amount of forward momentum. Specifically, a Long Jump covers more lateral distance in midair than a character’s standard Jump. Long Jumps may be used to platform across large gaps or as a specialized Burst Movement Option.

Most commonly, Long Jumps are performed by combining a Jump in sequence with another grounded movement option, such as a Sprint or Dash. The required setup and increased complexity of the action is the main drawback associated with most Long Jumps. They are also often shorter vertically than a character’s standard Jump, limiting their uses.

Examples

Super Mario 64 (1996) – The player character can perform a Long Jump by Sprinting, Crouching, and Jumping in quick succession. When performed consecutively in a certain way, the player can perform a Backwards Long Jump, a notable Advanced Movement Technique used in speedruns.

Hollow Knight: Silksong (2025) – The player character can perform a Long Jump by Jumping while Sprinting.

Ultrakill (Upcoming) – The player character can perform a Long Jump (called a Dash Jump in-game) by Jumping during a grounded Dash. This is Resource-Dependent, with the Dash and the Long Jump each costing 1 bar of stamina. While the Long Jump can only be performed from a grounded Dash, it does have Coyote Time unique to it, allowing the player to Long Jump after Dashing off an edge.
