Knockback as a Movement Option

Knockback as a Movement Option is an Advanced Movement Technique, typically a Burst Movement Option, that involves the player causing some form of Knockback onto themselves that allows them to move. Typically, this takes advantage of the Knockback related to specific Attacks.

This mechanic often shows up as Rocket Jumping, in which a player shoots a rocket from a launcher at their feet to gain better positioning and sometimes altitude. However, Knockback can come from sources aside from

Examples

Quake (1996) – One of the first examples of Rocket Jumping in games.

Team Fortress 2 (2007) – The Engineer can Sentry Jump, a technique in which they intentionally get shot by their own sentry. Because all projectiles in Team Fortress 2 deal Knockback, this can allow a player to travel distances, at the cost of Self Damage.

ULTRAKILL (Upcoming) – The player character’s Jackhammer weapon knocks the player back when striking an enemy.
