Knockback

Knockback is an effect of an Attack that pushes the character hit away in the direction of the Attack. For Melee Attacks, this is typically the direction the attacking character is facing, while for Ranged Attacks, this is typically the direction-of-travel of the projectile.

Knockback velocity is often constant throughout the game, but there can be modifiers applied to a given Attack’s Knockback based on stat changes, Status Effects, or the nature of the Attack itself.

Examples

Team Fortress 2 (2004) – Any Attack applies an amount of Knockback, which can be a useful tool for preventing flying enemies from moving where they want. Also features Knockback as a Movement Option.

Hollow Knight (2018) – Player Attacks deal Knockback which is dependent on enemy weight.

Into the Breach (2018) – Example of Knockback in a Grid-Based Movement system. Characters and structures take additional damage when knocked back into other characters and structures.

Super Smash Bros. (1999) – All Attacks deal Knockback which scales higher the more damage the player has taken.
