Air Dash

An Air Dash is a Burst Movement Option which allows the player to move quickly, laterally, and monodirectionally while midair. Similar to a Dash, an Air Dash is often used to more precisely position the player character, approach an enemy, escape trouble, or complete a jump. Because the Air Dash is done in midair, it will often offer increased maneuverability. This is because there are more enemy-free places to go than on the ground.

Some games make a major distinction between grounded between dashes and air dashes. In some games, they are one and the same action, with the only difference being verticality. Like Dashes, they may come with Invincibility. Some Air Dashes may be Resource-Dependent Movement Option, while others may be limited by Cooldowns or a one-per-jump rule.

Examples

Hollow Knight (2018) – The player character has a horizontal Air Dash used for engaging with both the terrain and enemies. Depending on their upgrades, the Dash may give temporary Invincibility.

Celeste (2018) – The player character has an 8-direction Air Dash utilized for completing Platforming challenges.

Guilty Gear Strive (2021) – Most characters have an Air Dash that is a separate action from their Dash and Backdash. It can be used for Jumping onto the other side of the opponent, chained into various combos, and allows for other forms of engagement perhaps more difficult to defend against.

Ultrakill (Upcoming) – The player character has an Air Dash that is Resource-Dependent, consuming Stamina. No distinction is made between the grounded Dash and Air Dash.
