Advanced Movement Technique

An Advanced Movement Technique is a technique executed by a player character used to move them that is not an expressly delineated part of the player character’s moveset. These are generally achieved by connecting parts of the moveset, such as Walking, Jumping, Sprinting, and Burst Movement Options, in a specific order or with specific timing. Many of these techniques rely on bugs or exploits. A player uses Advanced Movement Techniques to move more quickly or flexibly than is possible with their base moveset.

Advanced Movement Techniques may serve the purpose of a Sprint in increasing linear speed, or may serve the purpose of a Burst Movement Option of closing a discrete amount of distance quickly. However, the utility of these techniques isn’t always raw speed or distance; sometimes they may be more flexible than base movement options, or bypass downsides or limitations on other movement tools.

Examples

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (2012) – Features a technique called Bunny Hopping, which allows the player to move more quickly than is normally possible by jumping forward consecutively.

Super Smash Bros. Melee (2001) – Features (among others) Wavedashing, which is a grounded movement option that allows the player to slide forward while fully actionable.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017) – Features (among others) a technique called Whistle Sprinting, which allows the player to move at the speed of the player character’s Resource-Dependent Sprint without consuming stamina.
